What is a Normal Period?
Reduce Your Pain & PMS Symptoms
with Dian Shepperson-Mills, Nutritional Therapist

Women experience period cramps, mild pains requiring perhaps the odd paracetamol. Other women have severe, debilitating period pains with abdominal bloating and bowel problems, which require stronger medicines.
We will look at how the body controls pain and which nutrients are involved in pain reduction by the body, and which can help to prevent pre-menstrual symptoms like breast tenderness, and irritability and tiredness. We will talk about the many causes of period pains like fibroids and endometriosis, and have a discussion about which foods help the body to reduce inflammation and control cramps. A healthy reproductive system depends upon the way the liver and digestive system work, and you will find ways to improve your health.

Dian Shepperson Mills Cert Ed. BA, Dip ION, MA, BANT. NTCC. is a Nutrition Therapy consultant working at the Hale Clinc. She has done research into the symptoms of endometriosis and infertility and how they respond to changes in diet, as part of her MA in Health Education. Balancing Brain Chemistry
with Peter Smith, Nutritionist, Homeopath & TCM Practitioner

Out of balance brain chemistry can cause eating disorders, sugar and carbohydrate cravings, weight gain, anxiety, addictive personality, reckless/risky behaviour and of course depression.

Whether the cause of an out of balance brain chemistry comes from the mind and emotions overly taxing your brain chemicals, or is an inherent imbalance in the brain itself, the situation can be helped and often cured by directly re-balancing your brain chemistry with diet, supplement, and amino-acid therapy.
Through self-assessment questionnaires and a little experimentation, you can identify imbalances in the four important brain chemicals or neurotransmitters. You can then readdress the imbalances and overcome the problem behaviour they were causing.
Before re-attempting to rebalance your neurotransmitters however, you must do two things:
Identify and eliminate any so-called allergies, which can have a profound destabilising effect on the brain and behaviour.
Secondly, you must thoroughly stabalise your blood sugar by understanding and practising the Glycaemic Index, Glycaemic Load, Glycaemic Response and Zone dietary systems. It may also be necessary to practice relaxation training and meditation to cold the nervous system and adrenal glands if they are involved in upsetting your blood sugar control.
Other topics covered will be: oils, heavy metalsand mental health.

In the case of depression and anxiety for some people the imbalance will be primarily coming from the mind, for them the emphasis in recovery should be psychotherapy and directly re-balancing neurotransmitters would be an adjunct therapy. For others however, the imbalance will be primarily a chemical imbalance in the brain. In this case the primary treatment should be the methods discussed in this talk, and psychotherapy would be the adjunct therapy to lessen the impact of negative emotions on
already depleted neurotransmitters.

Regrettably the discussion on re-balancing neurotransmitters will be of little help for OCD, schizophrenia and psychotic illnesses. Eliminating brain allergies and stabilising blood sugar would still be beneficial.

Peter Smith practices at the Hale clinic (central London) as a holistic medical consultant and has been in practice since 1988. He is trained in Bicom resonance therapy, which diagnoses and treats allergies, Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, nutritional medicine, psychotherapy and meditation/Kundalini yoga. He has extensive experience in nutritional approaches to treating depression and anxiety.

Vital Signs for Cancer
with Xandria Williams, Naturopath

Cancer can more usefully be thought of as a process, rather than solely as a tumour. It goes from perfect health to the development of the first permanent transformed (cancerous) cell. This is Phase I. This single transformed cell then produces more cells and the colony forms a tumour. This is Phase II.
Preventing cancer requires that you halt your progression along the Phase I pathway. Recovering from cancer requires more than the removal or destruction of a tumour. It requires the elimination of all the triggers that moved you along both phases of this process.

In her latest book, "Vital Signs for Cancer" Xandria Williams describes the many warning signs that indicate your possible progression along Phase I, the tests you can do to warn you of very early, and possibly unsuspected, problems, and the changes you can make to your lifestyle to return to better health before you enter Phase Two. In easily understood language she explains why seemingly minor health problems could trigger much more serious problems, and how to correct them, thus reversing back out of Phase I of the Cancer Process.
She describes and discusses a simple and inexpensive blood test, the results of which can warn you, as much as ten years ahead of time, if cancer cells are beginning to form and could, many (or a few) years into the future become a detectable tumour.
While some people may prefer to put their head in the sand and not have the information from this test, it has given vital early warnings, or reassurance, to many others. The results of the test can also be used to monitor your progress. It is much easier to correct the problem at an early stage than once a detectable tumour has formed.

At this lecture Xandria Williams will be covering the many topics of (prevention) Phase I of the Cancer Process, both for primary prevention, and for secondary prevention (of a recurrence), as discussed in her book. As with so many CAM approaches to health, the foundation of any health recovery program is the same as the prevention strategies (although more is, of course, generally required for recovery), thus they are worth following for everybody.

In the second half of the talk Xandria will be available for questions and discussions as appropriate for the people in the room.

Xandria Williams studied chemistry at Imperial College, London [B.Sc, IIA, A.R.C.S., and D.I.C.) and at Otago University New Zealand (M.Sc.). Her first career was as an exploration and research geochemist in the mining industry, involved in mineral and oil exploration, based in a number of Southern Hemisphere countries.
Xandia was in Sydney, Australia when she changed profession and turned to biochemistry and the study of human metabolism, nutrition, naturopathy, herbal medicine, homeopathy (N.D. and D.B.M.). and then did post-graduate courses in psychotherapy (NLP and others). She has been in private practice for thirty years, initially in Sydney, now in England and Ireland. She has always helped people with a wide range of both physical and emotional problems but in recent years has focused progressively on the prevention and care of the more serious degenerative diseases. She has been head of the Nutrition and Biochemistry Department in, and lectured extensively at, several Naturopathic, Chiropractic and Osteopathic colleges, both in Australia and England, and continues to give lectures to post graduate students. She has appeared frequently on radio and television. Her published works include nineteen books with two in press and two in process, and over 400 articles on physical and mental health care.

Inflammation
with Julia Hayward, Nutritional Therapist

Inflammation is a factor in many health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, prostatitis, acne, autoimmune diseases, cancer and arthritis. The lecture aims to look at some of the causative factors: infections, excessive intake of animal fats, omega 6 excess, acid reflux, high glycaemic foods and low stomach acid. As well as looking at inflammatory agents such as NF Kappa B and bradykinin. I would also like to talk about the pro-inflammatory state of the immune system known as TH2.
Then I will discuss some of the plethora of foods, herbs and nutrients, that can help ease inflammation, including blue green algae, flow-ease (pollen), reseveratrol, biobran, prostasol, quercetin, plant sterols, curcumin, reishi, ginger, green tea, enzymes and fish oils.

My name is Juliet Hayward. I worked as a nutritionist at the Nutri Centre for eight and half years. During that time I was able to explore the ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of supplements and worked with many people who were often facing challenging diseases. Those people taught me so much. Since leaving the Nutri Centre, I set up my own business as a Nutritional Therapist. I now work at the Academy of Nutritional Medicine at the College of Naturopathic Medicine. A key part of my focus is supporting cancer patients nutritionally. I also do consultancy work for The Really Healthy Company.
